Richard Kemp, president of Kuba Construction, Inc., was born in Kanagawa, Japan and raised as a military brat while his family was stationed in Japan, Okinawa, & South Korea. His mother is Okinawan and his Father is a Florida native. Richard is very proud of his Okinawan heritage and that is why he decided to name the company “Kuba” Construction. Kuba is short for Kuba-gasa which is the Okinawan word for palm frond hat. His Okinawan grandfather wore this Kuba hat when at work fishing the waters off of Mizugama, Okinawa.
“Just seeing these hats brings a nostalgic feeling over me. My grandparents and family worked very hard to give me the opportunities that I have today. I want to carry on and improve on the life given to me and pass that along to my children.”
As a child growing up Richard was constantly building with his hands - building forts, wooden boat models, decks, book shelves. Any wood that wasn’t nailed down, would find its way into his personal play projects.
After graduating from the University of Florida with a degree in mechanical engineering, he began working for GE Power Systems as a project engineer. Richard was assigned to the Japan Projects Division and enjoyed frequent trips to Japan. In a short time he was promoted to Project Manager and was generally satisfied with his career. However, there was something missing. Richard longed to get back to building. It was then that he changed career paths and began working for an import housing company in Japan. The company specialized in importing American building materials and building American style homes for a niche market in Japan. Richard was hands-on for every phase of home building – sitework, concrete, framing, drywall, electrical, plumbing, trim, and cabinets. His next career move was to work for an architectural firm in Florida and finally as a project manager/site supervisor for Florida builders.
His ultimate goal was to operate his own construction business. He established Kuba Construction Inc. focusing on residential remodeling and new construction. Over time he has compiled a list of talented and trusted employees and subcontractors dedicated to exceptional customer service and impeccable craftsmanship. Richard has broadened his areas of expertise to include his passion for green building. He is certified with the Florida Green Builders Coalition and is also a LEED accredited professional. Constantly striving to improve, he measures his success in the industry by the satisfaction of his customers.
